Welcome to Colour | Nature | Design

CND Issue: #1

There is something quietly powerful about the point where colour, nature, and design meet.

For me, that meeting point has always felt like home. It is where a walk outdoors becomes a palette. It is where a cluster of leaves, a weathered fence, a shifting sky, or the rhythm of a garden bed can become the beginning of a pattern. It is also where design becomes more than decoration. It becomes a way of bringing feeling into the spaces we live in every day.

Welcome to Colour | Nature | Design - a journal-style space within Deb Nambiar Designs where I will be sharing the thoughts, observations, and creative threads that sit behind my work.

This blog is not intended to be a formal design manual or a stream of trend reports. Instead, it is a place for slower noticing. It is where I can share the inspiration that comes from nature, the role colour plays in shaping mood, and the design thinking that turns those ideas into surface patterns and visual stories for the home.

Nature has always been central to the way I see. Sometimes inspiration arrives through something grand - a wide Australian landscape, a dramatic coastline, or the seasonal shift in a garden. Just as often, it begins with something small: a seedpod, a petal edge, bark texture, a rhythmic scattering of leaves, or the geometry hidden inside a flower. These details hold colour, balance, movement, and form. They remind me that beauty is often built from repetition, contrast, and subtle variation - the same qualities that make pattern design so compelling.

Colour is the second part of that story. It has a way of changing the emotional temperature of a room without saying a word. A deep, earthy palette can feel grounding and calm. A burst of warm pink, ochre, or leaf green can bring life and optimism into a corner that felt forgotten. Colour can be bold or quiet, layered or spare, but it always carries atmosphere. In my own work, I am drawn to colour that feels expressive yet connected to the natural world - colour that lifts a space while still feeling lived in and warm.

Then there is design: the shaping, refining, and composing of all those raw observations into something useful and lasting. This is the part that asks questions. How will this motif repeat? What scale makes it sing? Where should contrast sit? What needs to be simplified, and what deserves to remain textured and expressive? Design is where inspiration becomes intentional. It is also where I find so much joy - in building repeats, balancing collections, and creating artwork that can live on fabric, wallpaper, and home decor in a way that feels considered and versatile.

Through this blog, I want to bring those three threads together in a way that is both practical and personal. Some posts will explore colour and how it can shape everyday spaces. Some will look more closely at nature and the small details that spark new work. Others will go behind the scenes of the studio to share the design process, collection stories, and the thinking behind particular patterns.

If you are a fellow creative, a fabric lover, a decorator, a homemaker, a pattern enthusiast, or simply someone who enjoys thoughtful design, I hope you will feel at home here.

My hope is that Colour | Nature | Design becomes a place that offers inspiration without overwhelm - a gentle, ongoing conversation about how beauty can be woven into daily life through pattern, observation, and intentional use of colour.

Thank you for being here at the beginning.

I am so glad to open this space and share it with you.

If you would like these stories delivered in a more personal note from the studio, you are warmly invited to join my newsletter, Drop of Colour, where I will share new posts, seasonal inspiration, and glimpses behind the scenes.

Warmly,

Deb N
